The Mariners Star is one of my favorite patterns. The creativity, determination and two years of playing by Sheryl Mycroft were what finally brought this pattern to life. She rearranged the Briar Patch blocks into a circle to create a Mariner’s Compass. Sheryl wanted to add to the compass and decided on a star so my son Bradley designed a star for the background behind the compass blocks. We decided a pieced border might help tie the quilt together so Bradley designed a spikey border to fit between the stars around the edge of the quilt. The quilt was designed for foundation paper piecing. The foundation units are very simple to master and fit together with simplicity. This pattern does require some curved piecing for the melons.
