Madeline Island School of the Arts (MISA) presents

2016 Quiltworx University with Judy Niemeyer

As the date of our retreat draws nearer, we’re excited to share some great news along with more detailed information about this once-in-a-lifetime event.

We’ve got information about the Certified Instructors, as well as our featured Certified Shop, information about the project, program schedule, daily schedule, and afternoon programs.  Did I mention FREE BERNINA SEWING MACHINES for everyone to use???  Well, read on, and you’ll have a lot more information to help you plan your trip!

Featured Certified Instructors

We’re excited to present the instructors who are attending, and a little bit of their background to help you get to know them.

How do you choose your instructor?  You don’t!  At Quiltworx University, we will have three classrooms set up with around 20 students in each room.  Our instructors will EACH teach in your classroom on three different days.  On the fourth day, you will stay with the instructor that you had on the third day in your workshop to learn to assemble the Quilt.  Judy will be in every classroom, every day, doing demos and providing hands on assistance!

Judy Niemeyer

Kalispell, MT

Judy is an international instructor known for her foundation paper piecing techniques and quilt patterns. Her company, Judy Niemeyer Quilting Inc., has published over 100 foundation paper pieced quilt patterns over the last 15 years. Her quilts and patterns have become well-known both nationally and internationally among quilters and quilt shop owners. The patterns include many sewing techniques commonly referred to as foundation paper piecing, traditional piecing, curved piecing, strip piecing, and appliqué.

Jennifer Eubank

Kodiak, Alaska

Jennifer has been teaching quilting for roughly 18 years, mainly in Kodiak, Alaska. She is a passionate paper piecer who loves to try new patterns, learn new techniques, and then teach others. She originally was introduced to Judy’s patterns a little over 14 years (or so) ago, learning how to make a double wedding ring. Since “finding” Judy’s newer patterns in 2010—starting with the Amazon Star, she had been making and teaching others to make Quiltworx quilts non-stop since then. Jennifer finds herself looking for ways to incorporate “Judy’s way” into all of her quilting classes.

Kristen Bender

Minnetonka, Minnesota

Kristen Bender has been teaching since 2011 and is thrilled to share Judy’s techniques, tips & tricks with others. She loves to see students’ eyes light up with excitement when they learn about them for the first time. Her passion for sewing began in Germany at age 9, when she sat with her mother and sewed clothes for her dolls. After she discovered quilting in 2004 her patchwork addiction was born. When she’s not quilting/teaching, she manages an office full of non-quilters and enjoys spending time with her husband and golden retriever.

Jodie Madison

New Auburn, WisconsinWith a masters degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Jodie has spent the last 14 years teaching mathematics to high school students.  During this time, crafts have always been a part of Jodie’s life, including needlepoint, crochet, and hand embroidery to name a few.  Her first quilt was a Trip Around the World quilt made for her sister in 2003.  That was the beginning of her quilting addiction!  She then found a two-day class at a local quilt shop teaching Judy’s Autumn Splendor pattern, and her passion for paper-piecing was ignighted.

Even though Jodie is new to the world of teaching quilting techniques, her passion for instructing students shines through.  Jodie’s fourteen years of teaching in the public school system have allowed her to become flexible and come up with different ways to explain Judy’s techniques.  Her teaching background gives her the ability to take complex quilting techniques and break them down into easy to understand steps.  The ultimate goal of teaching, according to Jodie, is to watch your students walk away with the confidence and knowledge to complete a project successfully.

Featured Certified Shop

Their goal is to provide a welcoming and fun quilt shop where customers come to see and experience the latest fabrics, notions, Bernina sewing/embroidery machines and one stop longarm quilting services.  Their shop fosters a unique atmosphere of sharing, warmth, and friendship that only quilters tend to create.

Not only will Quilters Quest be your on-site vendor with Quiltworx related fabrics, kits, patterns, notions and tools, but they will also be the exclusive provider of kits for this workshop to support the project.

Stay in touch with them as the retreat gets closer.  You can connect with them via their website at www.quiltersquest.com or follow them on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/quiltersquestusa.

As a Bernina dealer, Quilters Quest has also worked with Bernina to bring you the following exciting opportunity to test out a brand new Bernina machine at this event, for FREE!

There is no need to deal with the hassle of carrying your machine to this event as you will have brand new Bernina machines there to use, for FREE!  As a Bernina dealer, Quilters Quest has coordinated the donation of machines for all of the students and instructors during this event!

These machines are Bernina’s newest models and staff will be on-hand to teach you how to use them!

Event specials will also be available, so if you are considering a new sewing machine in 2016, you may want to wait for Madeline Island so you can test run before you buy at great prices that are tough to find anywhere else!

Feel free to contact Deb Bornella by email for more information about which machines will be provided, along with any questions on kitting or the project.

The Project

Quiltworx University is excited to bring you a dynamic and interactive quilt pattern using Judy’s techniques!  We have used our soon-to-be released Coloring and Design Studio within Quiltster to create three different units (or combination of units) to fit within the following quilt layout.

Lakeshore Sunrise

There are two options for how you will choose your project.

Option 1

Choose the Lakeshore Sunrise Quilt

Choose the recently published pattern called Lakeshore Sunrise and select your own fabrics and/or purchase a kit based on this design!  The above examples of the quilt show colorways that Quiltworx has created out of recent fabric collections using the Quiltworx Coloring and Design Studio in Quiltster (set to Launch in February 2016).  Click on each quilt to go directly to a yardage chart for that design!  Fabrics in each collection will be available through Quilters Quest!  Or, you can wait until Quiltster launches and choose your own colorway!

The Lakeshore Sunrise pattern incorporates Judy’s latest lone star assembly technique and also incorporates a classic flying geese concept in a circular border.  This quilt can be completed at the workshop and is an excellent option for those of you who are new to Quiltworx designs or those of you that don’t like surprises.

Option 2 requires your patience and trust in Quiltworx, com.  But, we HOPE you choose this approach!  Over the coming months, Quiltworx.com will be designing blocks that fit into the Lakeshore Sunrise pattern sections (see the above layout labeled Section 1, Section 2, and Section 3.  We will provide you with THREE options for each of those spaces that can be mixed and matched.  You will also have the option of putting a solid piece in that space, if you’d like.  (See the border for Lakeshore Sunrise as an example of a solid piece).

Because Judy wants to teach everyone NEW ideas at this workshop, we will not be publishing instructions in advance for these blocks.  We will, instead, bring a kit to the workshop that you will pick up there, with everything you will need, including the fabrics, to complete the quilt you have chosen.

We will provide you with several fabric kitting options using Judy and Judel’s latest fabric collections from Timeless Treasures, and three new batik collections that will be released throughout early 2016 called (Petals, Peacock, and Copper).  You will be able to pre-purchase a kit based on your favorite collection from Quilters Quest!  More information on the cost of the kits and the colorways available will be coming in March of 2016.

During the Summer of 2016, we will reveal the THREE block design options for each of the three sections in the layout above (labeled as Section 1, Section 2, and Section 3).  These blocks, designed with a blank option and also those designed for Lakeshore Sunrise will give each student a variety of ways to create their quilt design!

Our goal is to teach you techniques that will drive the future of Quiltworx patterns, not the past.  In other words, if you have attended several workshops in the past, you will see something new in the techniques that we teach at this workshop.

Our goal is for you to have completed at least one full quarter of your quilt before you leave, if not the whole thing, depending on which techniques you choose.

If you choose Option 2, (and we hope that you do!), you will not only go home with a beautiful design, but it will be truly unique to you!  Mostly, we believe you will have great fun!
