Class supplies and pre-cutting instructions for a one or two-day workshop.

Supply List and Precutting Instructions: In this class we will begin to construct a quilt based upon the Flying South pattern. You need to purchase the pattern before class. Yardage requirements are listed on the back cover sheet. You should read about selecting fabric on page one before you purchase your fabric.

Fabric #1, Light
Fabric #2, Medium Light
Fabric #3, Medium Dark, (More in the blended marble tone)
Fabric #4, Medium Dark, (More texture)
Fabric #5, Dark texture

If your are not sure what colors you want to use or how big you want to make this quilt then bring some practice fabric. You will need 1/2 yard each of a dark, medium, and light fabric. This will give you enough fabric to make a few blocks so you can learn the technique.

Things to do before class:

1. Read your instructions before class.

2. Make your templates: The templates for precutting your fabric are printed on page 11. Make two copies of page 11. Follow the instructions for making templates on page 1 and 2. Glue both copies onto a piece of template plastic with all the writing facing up. Cut out one page of templates to be used when cutting out your fabric. Bring the other page of templates to class un-cut.

3. Foundation Paper: Cut out 14 foundation blocks and have them ready for class. Trim the excess paper from your foundation papers about 1/8\” away form the outside cutting line. I will be demonstrating a quick and easy way to stack and trim the rest of the foundation papers in class so do not waste time cutting them out. If you have taken a class from me before and already know how to stack and trim the papers then you can cut them before class.

Pre-class Cutting instructions: Follow the cutting instruction in the pattern. Cut out your quilt before class and place all the pieces into their own bag. I will explain in class how to sort through the fabrics to make each unit, so you can relax after the cutting is finished. If you do not cut any fabric out prior to class you will not get any sewing done.

Each template has its own cutting chart. The cutting chart will tell you how many strips to cut from each fabric and then how many pieces to cut from those strips. In the supply list I tell you to bring a box of Ziploc bags. Do not forget the bags! The number of fabrics you choose to use for colors 3 and 4 will determine the amount of bags you will use.

Colors 3, 4, & 5 can be divided into several fabrics similar in texture and value. Dividing up the yardage for the three colors mentions will add lots of interest to your quilt.
