Bali Wedding Star Instructions

Pre-cutting the fabrics is a mandatory requirement prior to taking this course. Please begin preparing for class at least 3-WEEKS prior to the class to make sure that you are able to get the pre-cutting completed before hand. This process will take you from 8- to 12-hours to complete, which does not count the time spent at the fabric store selecting the fabrics to use in the quilt. If this step is not completed, you will have a very difficult time keeping up and participating in the instruction. I do not want anyone to feel as though they have wasted their money and time.
The Bali Wedding Star Class: In this class, you will learn the techniques necessary to complete the Bali Wedding Star pattern. Please purchase the pattern before class and read through the instructions. If you have a copy of our original version of the Wedding Star, we request that you purchase the updated version. Due to the improved cutting and sewing instructions, Judy no longer teaches the methods associated with the original version. Please note that the improved cutting instructions alone will save you enough money in fabric (in addition to the fact that you get a larger quilt) to cover the cost of the new pattern. Yardage requirements are listed on the back page on the pattern, which is inside the box that comes with the pattern.
Cutting and Organization: In preparation for class, you will need:
1) All of your papers cut and placed into the appropriate bags. Instructions for this are included on page 2 under the heading Prepare Your Foundation Papers, through the section on General Cutting Instructions on page 3.
2) All of your 2-1/2 inch strips cut. If you have purchased Bali Pops Packages from Hoffman Fabrics of California, each package contains 40 strips. Refer to the Yardage Chart on the back page of the pattern for the number of strips you will need to make a quilt in the size of your choosing. Divide this by 40 to get the number of Bali Pops Packages that will need to be purchased. Note that if you are hoping to duplicate the colors in the quilt, you can refer to the box, which has eleven (11) color sets with eight (8) colors of fabric each. You can choose to match these colors or simply select groupings of your choosing, as long as you have an equal number of light, medium, and dark fabrics. If you are cutting your own, you will need to cut the number of strips noted on the chart from a variety of light, medium, and dark fabrics on your own. You will need extra foundations to complete a quilt larger than 6 rings by 6 rings.
You can order extra foundation papers from your local quilt shop, or from Judy Niemeyer Quilting, Inc. at www.quiltworx.com. Do not worry about grouping the colors together for your A and B units. This step is included as part of the workshop.
3) All of your Template Layout Sheets and associated fabric cutting completed (including the Backgrounds and Star Templates) and placed into the appropriate bags. Follow the instructions beginning with Chapter 2 on page 7 of your pattern, through Cutting Fabrics for the Medium Star Points, on page 9.
