Pre-cutting the fabrics is a mandatory requirement prior to taking this course. Please begin preparing for class at least 3-WEEKS prior to the class to make sure that you are able to get the pre-cutting completed before hand. This process will take you from 8- to 12-hours to complete, which does not count the time spent at the fabric store selecting the fabrics to use in the quilt. If this step is not completed, you will have a very difficult time keeping up and participating in the instruction. I do not want anyone to feel as though they have wasted their money and time.

Supply List and Precutting Instructions: In this class we will begin to construct a quilt based upon the Briar Patch pattern. Please purchase the pattern before class. Yardage requirements are listed on the back cover sheet. Please read the note at the top of the yardage page before purchasing fabric. The yardages were set up according to templates so that a person would be able to divide the amounts needed according to where they wanted to place their colors. You may need to pull one of the foundation papers out of the pattern to find the location for each of the templates. If you are not sure what colors you want to use for your quilt, then bring some fabrics to play with.

Templates: You will need to make your templates before you can cut out any of the fabric for this quilt. If you have access to Avery label paper in the 8 1/2″ by 11″ sheets, this is a great way to make templates. Photocopy the templates onto the Avery label paper, then peel the back off and place the sticky side down onto your template plastic.

Foundation Paper: You will need to cut out one sheet of foundation papers for the arcs. These need to be ready to use in class. Trim the excess paper from your foundation paper about 1/8” away from the outside cutting line. There is no need to cut out the rest before class unless you just have time to waste. I will be demonstrating a quick and easy way to stack & trim the rest of foundation papers in class.

Cutting Fabric: Cut the following pieces from your fabrics before class. The strips listed below will give you enough fabric pieces to make a couple blocks. This will give you enough blocks so you can learn my foundation piecing technique.

Background B-1: Cut two (2) 3 ½” strip 42” wide from one background fabric. Mark this fabric as B-1.
Background B-2: Cut two (2) 4” strip 42” wide from the same background fabric. Mark this fabric as B-2.
Points: Cut one (1) 3 ½” strip 42” wide from two of your dark fabrics. Mark this fabric as Points.
C-1: Cut two (2) 3 ½” strip 42” wide from a medium, or medium dark fabric. Mark this fabric as Center One.
Optional: C-2: Cut one 8” strips 42” wide from the fabric you selected for center two, which should be the same as center one. Mark this fabric as Center Two.
Optional: C-3: Cut one 4 ¾” strip 42” wide from the fabric you selected for center three and mark it as Center Three.
Melon: Cut four (4) 3 ½” squares from your melon fabric and mark these pieces as Melons.
