Pre-cutting the fabrics is a mandatory requirement prior to taking this course. Please begin preparing for class at least 3-WEEKS prior to the class to make sure that you are able to get the pre-cutting completed before hand. This process will take you from 8- to 12-hours to complete, which does not count the time spent at the fabric store selecting the fabrics to use in the quilt. If this step is not completed, you will have a very difficult time keeping up and participating in the instruction. I do not want anyone to feel as though they have wasted their money and time.

Pre-Class Instructions: Purchase your pattern. Please read the instructions in your pattern at least one (1) time before class. This will help to ensure that you understand the cutting information below. It is strongly encouraged that you have the papers, templates, and fabrics for the entire quilt cut out, placed in bags, and ready to use in class. I have listed the units used in both quilts below. The actual cutting instructions are listed in your pattern. Please follow the cutting instructions in your pattern. Note: If you do not have time to cut out the whole quilt, you should at least have four (4) foundation papers for each unit, enough fabrics cut to complete four (4) of each unit, and all the template for EACH foundation unit bagged and ready for class.

Foundation Papers: The foundation papers used in this pattern are also used in other patterns that our company will publish in the near future. For this reason, the units will not always follow each other in alphabetical order. These patterns use five (5) different foundation units. Please take time to become acquainted with each unit before starting. Prepare the foundation papers by trimming the excess paper from around the outside cutting line by approximately 1/8”. It is much easier to position the fabric under the foundation papers when the excess paper has been trimmed away. Place a large paper clip on each group to keep the units together.

Templates: You will need to make templates prior to cutting out any of your fabric pieces. How to make the templates: Photocopy the template pages on 11” by 17” paper. A spray adhesive can be used to adhere the copies onto a large sheet of template plastic. Bring the template to class along with the fabric pieces cut for each unit.

Caution! Always check your templates for accuracy after photocopying or scanning to the original templates in the pattern. If the templates are not sized properly before cutting your fabrics, the fabric pieces you cut could end up the wrong size and you may need to re-cut and start over with new fabric.

Appliqué: A one-hour appliqué demonstration is included in this class. Please do not worry about any prep work for the appliqué. I will demonstrate in class the technique and tools that I use to complete my appliqué. I will also hand out a supply list in class with a list of the tools and products that I use in my demonstration. If you like the technique that I use, tools will be available to purchase through the shop the class is taking place at.

In this class you will have the opportunity to learn most of the techniques that I teach and write about in my patterns. I teach a process of foundation paper-piecing that uses a chain-piecing method. This process is possible because all of the fabric is pre-cut using templates that I have designed and included in the pattern. I also teach speed-cutting techniques for both paper and fabric. I teach sewing and pressing techniques that will enable you to do foundation paper piecing, curved piecing, and traditional piecing. I teach fast and easy ways to make templates, how to use them, and how to design them.

Cutting Instructions:

Unit S: Bag #5: Follow the cutting instructions for Unit S in your pattern. Please have enough fabric pieces cut to complete four (4) foundation papers. Place the templates, foundation units, and fabric pieces into Bag #5. The Pepper Dish Pattern only requires you to cut enough pieces for four (4) foundation Units.

Unit A: Bag #4: Follow the cutting instructions for Unit A in your pattern. Please have enough fabric pieces cut to complete four (4) foundation papers. Place the templates, foundation units and fabric pieces into Bag #4.

Unit P: Bag #2: Follow the cutting instructions for Unit P in your pattern. Please have enough fabric pieces cut to complete four (4) foundation papers. Place the templates, foundation units, and fabric pieces into Bag #2. The Pepper Dish pattern only requires you to cut enough pieces for four (4) foundation Units.

Unit B: Bag #3: Follow the cutting instructions for Unit B in your pattern. Please have enough fabric pieces cut to complete four (4) foundation papers. Place the templates, foundation units, and fabric pieces into Bag #3.

Unit E: Bag #6: Follow the cutting instructions for Unit E in your pattern. Please have enough fabric pieces cut to complete four (4) foundation papers. Place the templates, foundation units, and fabric pieces into Bag #6.

Extra foundation papers are available for a king size quilt for the Cactus Rose. The information required to order the extra foundation packages can be found on my web page. If you would like to have the extra foundations available to you during class, you must order them from me before class. If you are signed up to take this class through a quilt shop, please place your order through the store in advance so they will have time to place an order with me.
