Japanese Fan Instructions

Pre-Class Instructions: Two-day or Three-day Workshop: Purchase your Pattern and select your fabrics. The yardage amounts are listed on the back page of your pattern. To do the precutting for this class you will need to follow the cutting instructions in the pattern. For class I would like you to have all the large rectangles cut out for each template layout sheet and each individual template.
Below is a list of what I want ready for class. If you don’t complete the cutting requirements listed on this page you will spend all your time in class cutting and worrying about catching up. So please have the papers, templates, and fabrics ready according to the list below. If you have taken a class from me in the past and you understand the cutting process for the template layout sheets, then feel free to continue and cut out the whole quilt.
Foundation Papers: The foundation papers used in this pattern are also used in other patterns that our company has already published or will publish in the near future. For this reason, the units will not always follow each other in alphabetical order. This quilt has four (4) different foundation units. They are listed as Unit-JJF, Unit-CGB, Unit-CGC and Unit-JFB. Don’t worry about where they go, just follow the cutting instructions.
Prepare the foundation papers by trimming the excess paper from around the outside cutting line, approximately 1/8”. It is much easier to position the fabric under the foundation papers when the excess paper has been trimmed away. You only need to cut out one page of foundation papers for each unit. Place a large paper clip on each group to keep the units together. I will be demonstrating a fast way to cut out these papers in class, so don’t waste your time cutting everything out one at a time.
Templates and Template Layout Sheets: Several of the templates for Japanese Fan were arranged and grouped together on “Template Layout Sheets.” Each foundation unit has one (1) or two (2) template layout sheets. You will need to make copies of these layout sheets before coming to class. In class, I will show you how the layout sheets are used to cut out your fabric pieces.
How to Make the Templates: Photocopy the template pages on 11” by 17” paper. Each template page in the pattern tells you how many copies to make for both the templates and template layout pages. Take your patterns with you to get your copies. Some places are a little sticky about making copies from my patterns. Permission has been granted on the template layout sheets to make copies so you should not have problems with the copyright issues. Note: Trim around the outside of each grouping, but don’t cut the single templates apart. Bring the full sheets to class along with the fabric pieces cut for each unit. If this is confusing to you just bring the copies to class.
Caution! Always check your templates for accuracy after photocopying or scanning to the original templates in the pattern. If the templates are not sized properly before cutting your fabrics, the fabric pieces you cut could end up the wrong size and you may need to re-cut and start over with new fabric.
Cutting Information: You will need to follow the instructions in your patterns to complete the list below. You don’t need to crosscut the larger rectangles into the individual pieces with the template layout sheets. I will go over this in class and my demonstration will save you hours of work. If you have taken a class from me before feel free to proceed with the cutting for the whole quilt.

In this class you will have the opportunity to learn some of the techniques that I teach and write about in my patterns. I teach a speed cutting and speed-piecing process for foundation paper piecing that involves chain-piecing. This process is possible because the fabrics have been pre-cut using templates designed for foundation paper piecing. I teach sewing and pressing techniques that simplify the techniques most commonly taught for foundation paper piecing and curved piecing. I teach fast and easy ways to make templates, how to use them, and how to design them.
Extra foundation papers are available for this quilt. The information needed to order the extra foundation papers, is listed on my web page. If you would like to have the extra foundation papers available to you before class they can be ordered and purchased from your local quilt shop or on line through Judy Niemeyer Quilting.
