Thistle Creek Crossing Instructions

Class Supply List and Pre-cutting Instructions: This class was designed to teach foundation paper piecing. In this class we will begin to construct a quilt designed around a pattern called Thistle Creek Crossing. You will need to purchase the pattern prior to class and read over the instructions. In this one-day class you not have time to cut out your templates or fabric during class, so your templates and fabrics must be cut out prior to class. You only need to cut out the templates and fabric pieces used for the foundation units.
You will not finish this quilt in class but when you leave at the end of the day, you should have a good understanding of the techniques I teach for foundation paper piecing, and you will know how the quilt is set together. This class will include a 1-hour demonstration on machine appliqué using a product called rinse away. I will have this product along with information about this product available in class for you.
The following items with * are required for class, the others are just a good idea:
*Small scissors
*Rotary cutter
*Medium size cutting board
*6″ by 24″ ruler
*12″ or 6″ Add-A-Quarter ruler
*Seam ripper
*Scotch Tape
*Marking Pencil
*Plastic template material
*Surge protector
*A good quality cotton thread
Large and small Ziploc bags
Washout fabric glue stick (I will have these available)
A Purple Thang (I will have these with me)
Small iron
Flat ironing board
Extension cord
A good working sewing machine
Flower pins
Large & small Ziploc bags
Stapler
1/4″ foot for your sewing machine
Size 70 or 80 sewing machine needles
Fabric Requirements for Class: This quilt was designed for using a large selection of scraps. If you choose to purchase your fabric follow the yardage on the back page of the pattern.
Templates: You need to make your templates before you can cut out any of the fabric pieces. Read about making templates in your pattern on page 2. If you have access to Avery label paper in the 8 1/2″ by 11″ sheets this is a great way to make templates. Photocopy the templates onto the Avery label paper, then peel the back off and place the sticky side down onto your template plastic.
Foundation Paper: Read the section on foundation papers on page 2. Cut out all the papers before class. You only have four pages. Trim the excess paper from your foundation paper about 1/8″ away from the outside cutting line. Place all the papers into their appropriate bags. I will demonstrate a quick and easy way to stack & trim the paper in class. This process you can use when making another quilt.
Pre-cutting Instructions for each Foundation Paper Block: Refer to Page 2, 3, and 4 for the cutting instructions for this quilt. Follow the cutting information listed in the pattern for each of the following units.
Thistle Bottoms: Make sure you have enough fabric cut out to make at least four (4) thistle bottoms. There is not much cutting to this quilt. You may want to just cut out enough for the sixteen (16) pieces. It is up to you. Place these pieces into Bag #1.
Thistle Tops: You need to have enough pieces cut out to make at least four (4) of these in class. If you have time you should just consider cutting out the pieces for all sixteen (16) papers.
Rainbow Border: If you can figure out how to arrange these pieces before class and cut them out then please cut them out. If you want to watch my demonstration first before choosing your colors then please feel free to wait until after class to do these units. They are easy to do once you understand the piecing process that I will be showing you.
Background: This is optional. You will not get far enough to sew any of the background sections together in class. I will demonstrate how the quilt is set together at the end of class.
I am including a list of supplies that I use for machine appliqué. Each of the tools below will be used in my appliqué demonstration. You do not need these for class because you will not be doing any appliqué. I just thought you might want a list of what I use in my demonstration.
Rinse a way/Dissolve stabilizer
Metal Bias bars
Roxanne basting glue
Size 60 needles for machine appliqué
Size 60, machine embroidery thread
Fast Tube foot
