Pre-cutting the fabrics is a mandatory requirement prior to taking this course. Please begin preparing for class at least 3-WEEKS prior to the class to make sure that you are able to get the pre-cutting completed before hand. This process will take you from 4 to 8 hours to complete, which does not count the time spent at the fabric store selecting the fabrics to use in the quilt. If this step is not completed, you will have a very difficult time keeping up and participating in the instruction. I don’t want anyone to feel as though they have wasted their money and time.
Tumbleweeds Class: This class is designed to teach you the simplicity of foundation paper piecing along with simple stack and slice techniques to speed up your cutting time. You will need to purchase a copy of the pattern listed above for this class. The patterns include the yardage instructions, template making instructions, and the foundation papers. Read your pattern prior to class.
Cutting Instructions for the Foundation Papers: The foundation papers are located on newsprint included with your pattern. Refer to the “Prepare your Foundation Papers” section at the top of the second column on page 2 for information on cutting out the foundation papers and organizing them into the appropriate groups. Prior to class, you only need cut out one page of each unit. Put these units into the proper bags or groups. The organization of the papers, templates, and fabric is a critical step in this pattern as it will save you a lot of time sorting and identifying the pieces you have cut for your pattern as you sew them together.
Cutting Instructions for the Templates and Template Layout Sheets: The template sheets are either located on 11″ x 17″ sheets in the middle of the pattern or on newsprint included with the pattern. Locate the template sheets in your pattern and read the “Prepare your Templates” section on pages 2 and 3. In some cases, you will need to make copies of the templates and template layout sheets. In some cases, you can use the ones provided. The instructions in each pattern will give you this information. Place the templates and template layout sheets into the appropriate bags.
Yardage for a 78″ x 78″ Quilt:
Yardage information is provided on the back of your pattern.
Cutting Your Strips: Refer to the cutting instructions in your pattern and precut all the strips and rectangles needed to complete the cutting for Colors #1 through #4, on page 3, Colors #5 to #16, also on page 3, Color #17, on page 4, and Color #18, on page 4. The sub-cutting for the Template Layout Sheets should be reserved for class. Organize the strips and rectangles into the various bags or groups as explained in the pattern.
At this point, the only additional cutting that needs to be completed prior to class is Unit BA Spike, and for the borders, Bag #5 and Bag #6.
Cutting Instructions for Unit BA Spike: Refer to the Unit BA Spike, Template Layout Sheet instructions on page 5, about 1/2 way down Column 1. Follow steps 1 through 4.
Cutting Instructions for Bags #5 and #6: Follow the instructions on the last half of the second column on page 5 under “Cutting Instructions: Units TW-B, TW-BC1, and TW-BC2: Bag #5 and Bag #6, Cut (136) pieces”.
