Madeline Island Retreat Attendees, Select Your Pattern & Fabrics by Friday, June 17th!
Madeline Island School of the Arts (MISA) presents2016 Quiltworx University with Judy NiemeyerAs we get closer to the big event, we’ve been working diligently to organize some exciting pattern and kitting options for you to choose from in preparation for the retreat. With that said, we need some input from you to proceed. We’re providing three options below for you to consider. Once you’ve had a chance to look through them all, we need you to email us with the option you’d like to choose including your choice of pattern and fabrics if applicable. We’ll provide you with an email template at the bottom of this post, which will consist of text you can copy and paste into an email informing us of your selections. Please respond by Friday, June 17th! The Project Lakeshore Sunrise There are three options for selecting the pattern and your fabrics. OPTION 1: Purchase a Lakeshore Sunrise pattern.
OPTION 2: Select one of the Madeline Island Sunrise Kits, exclusive to this event! (3 to 5 kits are estimated to be available of each, and will be considered on a first come, first served basis!) OPTION 3: Work with us on a completely customized quilt, where you pick the combination of blocks for your quilt and your favorite fabric collection from the list shown below! We’ll create something truly unique to you! EXCITING NEWS! Judy will be in Chicago mid-July to help Quilters Quest prepare kits for this workshop! Continue reading below for more information including photos, pricing, and links to yardage sheets for each option below.
Lakeshore Sunrise Pattern/Kits Choose one of the following options:
The above quilts feature colorways created by Quiltworx from our newest fabric collections. Click on each quilt to go directly to a yardage chart for that design! You’ll receive 10% off the fabrics and pattern from Quilter’s Quest. If you purchase a kit for Lakeshore Sunrise, we will cut and ship to you mid to late July, and you will need to complete the cutting instructions before bringing it to the workshop. Madeline Island Sunrise Kits PRICING: $190 to $275 depending on color and block combination, including a $45 pattern and $15 kit preparation fee. Final cost will be provided before cutting. The costs below are based on estimated yardage calculations and may vary as final cutting templates are designed. These kits are only available to attendees of this workshop! If you select this option, we’ll cut the kit and prepare it, for the class. We will bring the kits to the workshop for you so there is no preparation needed! As we work out final yardage, we will let you know the final cost of the kit that you have selected before we prepare it.* These prices are based on a 10% discount on fabrics and pattern pieces as well! Click the images below to view a larger Quiltster quilt mockup.
* Substitution Note: We anticipate we will be able to cut about 3 to 5 kits of each colorway shown here and these will be available on a first come first served basis. If we cannot provide you the colorway requested, we will contact you and verify you want to move to the second colorway you have selected. We will do our best to accommodate the fabrics that are shown in the samples here and in the custom packages that you have selected. In the event that we have to substitute a fabric, we will make a judgment call on whether our substitution is close enough to work in the pattern or not. If a suitable substitute is not available, we will also move to your second choice kit and/or call and discuss. Lakeshore Sunrise Mixer PRICING: Individual pricing for each design option is listed below. Overall, we estimate between $225 to $300, depending on fabric selection and block layout. It includes a $45 pattern fee, a $25 design fee, and a $25 kit cutting fee. The design fee will allow you to see your quilt and request changes once the color has been laid out. The kit cutting fee reflects the cost for staff to prepare only one kit at a time, as opposed to cutting several at once. Customize the Lakeshore Sunrise pattern by selecting options A, B, or C for each of the 3 Sections (Center, Ring, Border). You may also choose fabrics from 7 new fabric collections. You will see your quilt before we finalize it, and have the chance to make changes before it is sent for kit cutting. When you have approved your design, we will send you the final price and this will include a 10% discount on fabrics and pattern pieces. The kit will be prepared for you and brought to Madeline Island for you to complete! No preparation on your end will be needed! Your Section choices are as follows (Click images to enlarge): You may choose one or more collections for your quilt. Once we have prepared all the kits for this workshop, we will be looking at the leftover fabrics and will determine how many additional kits of each colorway we can cut! We will share this information in advance of the workshop and if you would like one, we’ll bring it with us (we will even prep it, if you want!). We will also have some additional kits available at the workshop.

![]() ![]() Program Schedule
We’ve changed a few details in the schedule and would like you to review this information for arrival time, special programs and events, and check-out information!
Sunday, September 25th:
Note: The sewing studio has (2) rooms, each with (30) students. Every station has its own 4 foot table, and, each room is outfitted with (4) ironing and pressing stations. You will not be able to have an iron at your own personal station, but with your own personal table, you will have some space to complete much of your trimming needed during the paper piecing process in your quilt.
Don’t forget, you are invited to arrive to a station that has already been set up with a sewing machine (so there’s no need to haul your own). These complimentary machines are provided from Bernina and Quilters Quest, your exclusive Certified Shop on the island!
Staff from Quilters Quest will be on hand throughout the week to help you learn about your machines and will provide some excellent workshop specials for those of you that may be in the market for machines! New Project Information
We are excited to provide you a little more information to prepare you for your project! Again, if you are wanting to prepare your own project and bring your own fabrics, your project to work from during the retreat will be the Lakeshore Sunrise.
Lakeshore Sunrise
However, if you are looking to gain the most from this retreat in terms of learning something new and having a great time, we encourage you to consider the Workshop Projects, using the same layout as Lakeshore Sunrise, but with new blocks and techniques you have not seen before!
We will be designing (3) different blocks (or block groups) to fit the layout of the Lakeshore Sunrise spaces and you will be able to mix and match your design!
Not only that, but Quiltworx is working with Quilters Quest to provide pre-cut kits for the workshop! You may choose any of the following fabric collections designed by Judy and Judel Niemeyer, with Timeless Treasures, or from (2) shop-selected fabric collections for your quilt. So, please review these collections and think about which one might be your favorite!

On June 1st, you will receive a newsletter for the workshop that will show you the (9) possible quilt options (mixing and matching the blocks we have designed for the workshop). You can pick your layout and your collection and submit your order to Quilters Quest!
You will have two weeks to make your selection, and not only will they prepare the kit, but they will complete the pre-cutting as well! When you show up to class, you will simply need to “cut on the Cut Lines” for each Template Layout Sheet as you complete each block in your project!
There will be no class prep required by you, simply show up to your kit, ready to go for class! And, you will learn to make your project, along the way!
With (4) Instructors, (2) Shop Owners who are also experienced in Quiltworx designs, and (2) staff from Quiltworx to take care of you during this retreat, there will be many in the room to help you along the way!
In June, you can expect official kit prices based on each layout as well. We are so excited to bring you all such a dynamic and interactive classroom experience with your Madeline Island Retreat! Stay tuned for even more information, and we will be in touch again by June 1st!
With (9) possible layout options and (8) different fabric collections to choose from, there are up to 72 different project possibilities with this retreat!
While attending the retreat, you’ll see demonstrations and learn techniques to make all of the possible blocks. So don’t be afraid to let us know you like more than one. Work on one during the retreat and take the other home to make another project using all that you learned! And, take advantage of the opportunity to have your projects prepared for you, at excellent prices by Quilters Quest!
If you see a layout or colorway you just love while at Madeline Island, you will have the chance to custom order a kit for other variations there as well!

March Newsletter
We’ve been super busy updating patterns with new techniques and creating samples with our newest fabric lines designed by Judy and Judel Niemeyer with Timeless Treasures. The following patterns are now available for purchase on our website, and the fabric lines are available in a quilt shop near you! Click the images or links below to learn more about each pattern, find replacement papers, see samples made by Quiltworx.com and others, find kitting information, and purchase the pattern! Wholesale purchases are available to those approved with a wholesale account. Visit our wholesale page to order (minimum purchase of 3 and advance approval of wholesale account is required). Wildflowers CollectionWildflowers was designed by Judy and Judel Niemeyer with Timeless Treasures. Inspired by the vibrant colors of nature, this eye-catching collection really pops with our patterns creating show-stopping quilts. We love the whimsical incorporation of motifs found in the patterns, and the wild little critters found in several prints. Rainbow Hosta Queen The Rainbow Hosta Queen marks the launch of a series of patterns using new units designed to fit the original Fire Island Hosta and Fire Island Hosta Queen layout. When all of the patterns are published you’ll be able to mix and match units from each design to create your own unique quilt pattern using an upcoming subscription service called Quiltster.
This color layout was designed using Quiltster by Judel Niemeyer Buls. Quiltster is set to launch in the Spring 2016. Clamshell Clamshell is here! We’ve added the traditional shell block to our collection of foundation paper pieced patterns. With the shell, New York Beauty arcs, long spikes (with floating points), and sashing, this quilt incorporates many techniques that are very popular with those who love our patterns. Bali Pops Strip SetQuiltworx.com with Hoffman Fabrics of California are rolling out our latest generation of Bali Pops fabrics hand selected by Judy Niemeyer. The 2 strip sets include 48 2-1/2″ strips per group. These sets are designed to complement many of our quilt designs, especially our wedding ring patterns. Bali Wedding Star With this latest release of the Bali Wedding Star pattern, we’ve updated the instructions to our new standards including Smart Corners making assembly easier than ever. Solar Flares Solar Flares was designed by Quiltworx in 2015 as an addition to our collection of patterns that use the (48) pack of 2-1/2” strips that Quiltworx has created, involving pre-sorting and pre-packaging strips in six groups of 8, ranging from light to dark in color value. The design utilizes a block that is familiar to Quiltworx fans, originally used in the Raindrops pattern. The instructions have been adapted for a scrappy layout using 2-1/2” strips and a collection of (36) background fabrics (the pattern requires 1/4 Yard of each!). Lakeshore Batiks CollectionThis next quilt features Lakeshore Batik fabrics which were designed around some of Northwest Montana’s most famous lake shores, where waters are a rich turquoise color, the glacial rock deposits are deep reds and purples and shine brightly in the clear mountain waters where wheat fields line the shore. Stay tuned for more beautiful quilts created using this bright collection. Lakeshore Hosta Lakeshore Hosta is another beautiful rendition in our Fire Island Hosta series. It’s Quiltster Compatible, allowing subscribers to not only mix and match blocks but also audition fabrics. Tonga Petals BatiksJudy and Judel Niemeyer’s latest batik collection, Petals is a beautiful flower petal inspired collection of batiks in all of the colors of the rainbow! This collection was created as a complementary collection to Judy and Judel Niemeyer’s Wildflower Collection from Timeless Treasures and can be intermixed with that collection to make bright, spring inspired designs! Try accenting it with the light background prints in Wildflowers or a rich black batik from the Tonga Java Blenders Collection to make a bold statement. Quilt samples using this collection and Wildflowers are coming out from Quiltworx daily so watch for more creative options that pair these fun batiks with Wildflowers and some of the latest publications from Quiltworx.com. Tarnished Windmill Here’s a new take on one of our newer patterns the Tarnished Windmill. This fun pattern is designed with no y-seams, making the assembly process a snap. You can find the kitting information for this eye-catching color layout here. Summer Solstice We’ve given a new look to one of our most popular patterns, Summer Solstice, which we think looks stunning in the deep rich Petals fabrics. Click here for kitting information for this vibrant new color layout.

Grandma’s Wedding Ring This Grandma’s Wedding Ring showcases our Wildflowers Collection fabric line, and uses two different techniques for foundation paper piecing. A technique called Foundation Strip Piecing is used to piece the Wedding Ring arcs. Traditional piecing is used to assemble four squares for the background units. Traditional curved piecing is required to assemble the arcs, centers, and melons.
Lakeshore Snowfall
Bright new colorways in Wildflowers for our bold, fun to do One: Quiltowrx.com Leaf Series patterns. A very fast project, this pattern will be one that is made over and over again and can be taught in a one-day workshop as an introduction to paper piecing and Judy’s techniques!
Prismatic Star The latest release of our Prismatic Star pattern showcases the new Hoffman Bali Pops strip set JNBP3, hand selected by Judy. The blue quilt uses Group 1, while the cream quilt uses Group 2. The strip piecing process for the Prismatic Star was designed for foundation paper piecing. Strips are sewn onto foundation paper to complete what we call a ‘Strip Set’. After the strip sets are completed they are cut apart, rearranged and resewn into a diamond star point. Splash

MISA: Exciting Quiltworx University Updates
Madeline Island School of the Arts (MISA) presents
|
![]() Kalispell, MT Judy is an international instructor known for her foundation paper piecing techniques and quilt patterns. Her company, Judy Niemeyer Quilting Inc., has published over 100 foundation paper pieced quilt patterns over the last 15 years. Her quilts and patterns have become well-known both nationally and internationally among quilters and quilt shop owners. The patterns include many sewing techniques commonly referred to as foundation paper piecing, traditional piecing, curved piecing, strip piecing, and appliqué. |
![]() Kodiak, Alaska Jennifer has been teaching quilting for roughly 18 years, mainly in Kodiak, Alaska. She is a passionate paper piecer who loves to try new patterns, learn new techniques, and then teach others. She originally was introduced to Judy’s patterns a little over 14 years (or so) ago, learning how to make a double wedding ring. Since “finding” Judy’s newer patterns in 2010—starting with the Amazon Star, she had been making and teaching others to make Quiltworx quilts non-stop since then. Jennifer finds herself looking for ways to incorporate “Judy’s way” into all of her quilting classes. |
![]() Minnetonka, Minnesota Kristen Bender has been teaching since 2011 and is thrilled to share Judy’s techniques, tips & tricks with others. She loves to see students’ eyes light up with excitement when they learn about them for the first time. Her passion for sewing began in Germany at age 9, when she sat with her mother and sewed clothes for her dolls. After she discovered quilting in 2004 her patchwork addiction was born. When she’s not quilting/teaching, she manages an office full of non-quilters and enjoys spending time with her husband and golden retriever. |
![]() New Auburn, Wisconsin With a masters degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Jodie has spent the last 14 years teaching mathematics to high school students. During this time, crafts have always been a part of Jodie’s life, including needlepoint, crochet, and hand embroidery to name a few. Her first quilt was a Trip Around the World quilt made for her sister in 2003. That was the beginning of her quilting addiction! She then found a two-day class at a local quilt shop teaching Judy’s Autumn Splendor pattern, and her passion for paper-piecing was ignighted.Even though Jodie is new to the world of teaching quilting techniques, her passion for instructing students shines through. Jodie’s fourteen years of teaching in the public school system have allowed her to become flexible and come up with different ways to explain Judy’s techniques. Her teaching background gives her the ability to take complex quilting techniques and break them down into easy to understand steps. The ultimate goal of teaching, according to Jodie, is to watch your students walk away with the confidence and knowledge to complete a project successfully. |

The Project
Quiltworx University is excited to bring you a dynamic and interactive quilt pattern using Judy’s techniques! We have used our soon-to-be released Coloring and Design Studio within Quiltster to create three different units (or combination of units) to fit within the following quilt layout.
Lakeshore Sunrise
There are two options for how you will choose your project.
Choose the Lakeshore Sunrise Quilt
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |

![]() |
Choose the recently published pattern called Lakeshore Sunrise and select your own fabrics and/or purchase a kit based on this design! The above examples of the quilt show colorways that Quiltworx has created out of recent fabric collections using the Quiltworx Coloring and Design Studio in Quiltster (set to Launch in February 2016). Click on each quilt to go directly to a yardage chart for that design! Fabrics in each collection will be available through Quilters Quest! Or, you can wait until Quiltster launches and choose your own colorway!
The Lakeshore Sunrise pattern incorporates Judy’s latest lone star assembly technique and also incorporates a classic flying geese concept in a circular border. This quilt can be completed at the workshop and is an excellent option for those of you who are new to Quiltworx designs or those of you that don’t like surprises.
Option 2 requires your patience and trust in Quiltworx, com. But, we HOPE you choose this approach! Over the coming months, Quiltworx.com will be designing blocks that fit into the Lakeshore Sunrise pattern sections (see the above layout labeled Section 1, Section 2, and Section 3. We will provide you with THREE options for each of those spaces that can be mixed and matched. You will also have the option of putting a solid piece in that space, if you’d like. (See the border for Lakeshore Sunrise as an example of a solid piece).
Because Judy wants to teach everyone NEW ideas at this workshop, we will not be publishing instructions in advance for these blocks. We will, instead, bring a kit to the workshop that you will pick up there, with everything you will need, including the fabrics, to complete the quilt you have chosen.
We will provide you with several fabric kitting options using Judy and Judel’s latest fabric collections from Timeless Treasures, and three new batik collections that will be released throughout early 2016 called (Petals, Peacock, and Copper). You will be able to pre-purchase a kit based on your favorite collection from Quilters Quest! More information on the cost of the kits and the colorways available will be coming in March of 2016.
During the Summer of 2016, we will reveal the THREE block design options for each of the three sections in the layout above (labeled as Section 1, Section 2, and Section 3). These blocks, designed with a blank option and also those designed for Lakeshore Sunrise will give each student a variety of ways to create their quilt design!
Our goal is to teach you techniques that will drive the future of Quiltworx patterns, not the past. In other words, if you have attended several workshops in the past, you will see something new in the techniques that we teach at this workshop.
Our goal is for you to have completed at least one full quarter of your quilt before you leave, if not the whole thing, depending on which techniques you choose.
If you choose Option 2, (and we hope that you do!), you will not only go home with a beautiful design, but it will be truly unique to you! Mostly, we believe you will have great fun!
